Muso Jikiden Eishin RyuThe school of swordsmanship we study is Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu as taught by the Eikoku Roshukai which is headed by Iwata Norikazu Sensei, founder and kaicho of the Zenkoku Roshukai. Iwata Sensei is a 19th generation hanshi and menkyo kaiden holder who studied directly under students of the 17th headmaster, Oe Masamichi Sensei. The lineage of this school can be traced back over 450 years to the master swordsman credited with the development and widespread popularisation of Iaijutsu, Hayashizaki Jinsuke Shigenobu (1546 - 1621).
IaijutsuPractical Application - Iaijutsu was developed to deal with everyday situations rather than those on the battlefield. The many forms and their scenarios were created to help the practitioner be prepared for any eventuality, being attacked in a position of rest by a seated or standing attacker, being confronted with multiple attackers in differing directions and coping with constraints due to physical obstacles or non-combatants being present. Externally - Iaijutsu is the art of drawing the Japanese sword. It's main aspects typically consist of, quickly drawing the sword to defend or preempt attack (nukitsuke), cutting to dispatch the opponent (kiritsuke), removing debris from the blade (chiburui) and returning the sword to its scabbard (noto). Internally - Iaido is a path of spiritual, mental and moral development. When the mind and body are unified through continued austere training there is a concomitant development that manifests itself in the form of courage, patience, a resolute will and a dignified decorum. For those who are willing to train seriously in the art the rewards are many and ever lasting. TrainingIf you think you may like to join us but are not sure if iaijutsu is for you, the first session you attend will be free of charge and is commitment free.
